Tons of .msp files in C:\Windows\Installer?

I just had to clean up a Windows machine that was filled to the brim with…something.  After some digging, I found that there were a ton of .msp files in a folder called C:\Windows\Installer that were easily taking up about 3 gigabytes of space.  So, some quick Googling turned up this entry on MSDN blogs about cleaning up those files.  One command line command later and the drive was empty again.

Hi, I have the same problem. But I cannot get to the folder C:\Windows\Installer. When I search for it it’s like it does not exist.
I have used several programs like Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, Registyry Easy, RegistryBooster. None of them did help. Now I am defragmenting and I can see that this is moving the *.msp files for defragmenting.
Hope someone can help me with this issue. I have a total of 37 GB but only 10 is available. I have already copied all my data files to memory stick and deleted them from my PC. But this did not help.
    Thanks, Antonisia Con
